The Mcr Schools’ PE Association, established in 2011, has been created by Manchester Schools’ to pool and share resources, knowledge and skills and provide a collective support and development programme. The MSPEA now has 155 member schools. Led by two Strategic Managers (SGOs), a Competition Manager and a Sports Coordinator, hosted by Wright Robinson College, Our Lady’s RC High School and William Hulme’s Grammar School, the partnership brings together professionals who are striving to be at the forefront of PE, School Sport, Health & Wellbeing; sharing good practice; supporting our schools and ensuring High Quality PE, School Sport, Wellbeing & Personal Development opportunities for all Manchester pupils.

In order to inform our current programme, PE Subject Leaders and Head Teachers from more than 60 schools have been consulted.

2017-18 has been another hugely busy and successful year in Manchesters’ School Sports Competition calendar. There have been opportunities for your school to compete in events in 26 different sports with local heats leading to Manchester and Greater Manchester School Games finals. This has given your students the opportunity to try new sports and compete at a high level with pathways on to club sport and beyond. There have been more than 350 competitions, events and courses held for primary and secondary pupils & staff across the city. The programme supports your school in it’s use of Primary School Sport Premium funding, can be paid for via your PSSP funding and should be included in your PSSP Action Plan.

Rachel Redmond, Development Manager, Youth Sport Trust, said “Manchester has an excellent self-supporting PE Association, enabling schools to participate in one of the broadest and most inclusive competition, sports leadership and Change 4 Life programmes in the UK”.

Steve Wheeldon, Headteacher at Wilbraham Primary School said “we have engaged staff and pupils in an active PE and School Sport programme which positively impacts on so many areas of life in school including attendance, behaviour, confidence, motivation and ultimately achievement. The School Games Organisers and MSPEA are central to the co-ordination of so much of this activity.”

The affiliation fee for academic year 2018-9 is £635+VAT for primary, £600+VAT secondary schools (£400+VAT for single sex schools). This compares very favourably to neighbouring boroughs, for example; one neighbouring Greater Manchester Local Authority charge £5 per pupil for their membership, meaning that a school with 400 pupils would have to pay £2000.

Your school’s membership for 2018-19 will include :-

  • Comprehensive calendar of sports festivals, events, competitions and leagues
  • Professional development courses including first aid
  • Manchester Sports Leader programme
  • Work with key partners to develop Physical Activity, Health & Wellbeing strategies
  • Links to the Manchester Community Sports Club structure
  • School Games Mark

We will continue to work with partners to increase opportunities for your pupils. One example is the Change 4 Life Clubs programme, which has enabled 58 schools to access resources, coaching, professional learning and equipment worth over £2,000 per club.

The Association works closely with Manchester PE Teacher Training (MPETT) and the Youth Sport Trust. MPETT offer access to termly PE Subject Leader training and an through our partnership work YST offer an additional reduced annual membership of the Youth Sport Trust for 2018-19 for all our members. These benefits will enhance your PE and School Sport provision and help to provide a central national co-ordinating voice for PE, School Sport and Physical Activity.
